Upgrading to Version 6

This topic describes the upgrade procedure to Version 6.

IMPORTANT: If you have FileCenter and FileConvert, you MUST upgrade BOTH products. Different versions can't reside side-by-side on the same machine.

What Do I Need to Download?

FileCenter 6 features a unified interface, where scanning and PDF manipulation are included right in FileCenter. This means that FileImage and FilePDF from earlier versions are now included in FileCenter. The one exception to this is FileConvert, which is the Watch Folder feature from earlier versions of FileCenter broken out into its own robust application.

Can I Use the Same Product Key?

FileCenter 6 is a full upgrade, so you need a new product key. If you're current on your maintenance plan, you will have received one automatically. Otherwise, please contact Sales for upgrade pricing.

Installing Version 6

Version 6 can't run side-by side with older versions of FileCenter. Please uninstall all older versions first.

Settings

All of your Version 5 settings will migrate up to Version 6 automatically. Version 4 settings should also migrate, but older versions might not.

If for some reason you need to roll back to a prior version, you should be able to without any problem (though Version 6 settings will not migrate backwards).

Compatibility

Version 6 is fully cross-compatible with earlier versions of FileCenter. Some of the settings files have changed structure in Version 6. This means that Version 6 configuration changes aren't backward-compatible with earlier versions.

FileCenter Admin

If you're using the FileCenter Admin tool, we strongly recommend creating a completely separate set of network settings files for Version 6. This will let you roll back to your earlier version if you need to.

The installation sequence would be:

1. Install Version 6 on the machine where the Admin Tool runs
2. Install the Version 6 Admin Tool
3. Create a new network folder for your Version 6 settings files and installation files (they can go in the same folder)
4. Configure all of your settings the way you want them
5. Post your Version 6 settings to the new settings folder on the network
6. Post a new Installation Settings file on the network for Version 6 and copy the setup file there
7. On each workstation, uninstall the prior version of FileCenter, then install Version 6 using the setup file and installation settings on the network

Partial Rollout

You might consider putting Version 6 on just one machine to see how well it is going to work in your environment. It can work together with older versions on the same network (but not on the same machine). When you're comfortable with how it's working, update the rest of the machines.

You can always roll back to your prior version. All of your old settings (as of the time you installed Version 6) will still be intact.

Rolling Back

If you need to roll back to your prior version, just uninstall Version 6 and then reinstall the older version. All of your prior settings are still intact.
