Move the Program to a New Computer or Reinstall

This article describes how to move your software and settings to a new computer or how to reinstall the software after reinstalling Windows. Applies to: FileCenter, FilePDF, and FileConvert.

For these instructions, your "Old" computer refers to the computer you have the software running on now. The "New" computer is the computer where you want to install the program. If you are reinstalling Windows, your "Old" computer is your current Windows setup and your "New" computer will be your setup after reinstalling Windows.

Quick Move

If you don't have many customizations, it might be easiest to just do a fresh install on the new computer and do your few customizations again manually.

You'll need your product key to reinstall. If you don't have it, do this:

  1. On the "Old" computer, open the program and go to the "Help" menu.
  2. Select "Activation".
  3. Write down your Product Key.

Now download and reinstall the program. The latest versions of Lucion software are available here: Download Setup Files. Be sure to get the right version.

FileCenter Cabinets

If you're moving FileCenter, there is a way to export/import your cabinet settings.

IMPORTANT: It is critical to understand that this only sets the cabinets up in FileCenter; it does NOT bring the cabinet data over. You need to bring your data over yourself. See FileCenter Cabinets at the end of this article.

From your "Old" computer:

  1. Go to the FileCenter "File" menu
  2. Select "Export Cabinet Settings" (or "Cabinet Tasks" > "Export Cabinet Settings")
  3. Save the settings file somewhere that you can access it on the new computer (network drive, floppy disk, thumb drive, CD, etc.)

Once you've got FileCenter installed on the "New" computer, import your cabinet settings.

  1. Go to the FileCenter "File" menu
  2. Select "Import Cabinet Settings" (or "Cabinet Tasks" > "Import Cabinet Settings")
  3. Browse to the export file you created earlier
  4. Open it

Move All Settings

IMPORTANT: If you have more than one Lucion program on your computer (FileCenter, FilePDF, or FileConvert), you only have to do these steps for one of the programs. The product keys and settings for the other programs will come across at the same time.

"Old" Computer: Export Your Settings

The first step is to get your product key off of your "Old" computer:

  1. Open the program and go to the "Help" menu.
  2. Select "Activation".
  3. Write down your Product Key.

Now export all of your settings to any drive or medium that will let you transport them to the new computer: network drive, memory stick, thumb drive, CD/DVD, etc.

  1. Again, go to the "Help" menu.
  2. Select "Support Options" (or "Support").
  3. Click "Browse Settings".
  4. An Explorer window will open to your settings folder; leave it open, but minimize it.
  5. Go back to "Help" > "Support Options" and click "Close All FileCenter Apps". FileCenter will shut down.
  6. Finally, return to the Explorer window which shows your settings. Copy all of these files to the drive/medium you're using to transport the settings.

"New" Computer: Install and Import

The first thing to do on the "New" computer is install the program. If you're moving more than one program, install whichever program you have a product key for. The latest versions of Lucion software are available here: Download Setup Files

Now import the settings:

  1. Open the program and go to the "Help" menu.
  2. Select "Support Options".
Copy all of the files from the drive/medium you're using to transport the settings and paste them into this folder. Overwrite any files that are already there.

If you're moving more than one Lucion program, install the other programs now. Their product keys and settings are already in place.

FileCenter Cabinets

If you are moving FileCenter to a new computer, you will have to move your cabinet data separately. On the "Old" computer, open FileCenter and click the "Cabinets" button. Note the "Cabinet Location" for each cabinet on the list.

  • Each cabinet that is on a local drive (like your c: drive) will have to be moved to the "New" computer. Be sure to put them in exactly the same place.
  • Cabinets that are on network drives can stay where they are; just make sure the new computer uses the same drive letters for the network drives.
  • If you created all of your cabinets in the default locations, you can just move the "c:\my cabinets" folder and possibly your "My Documents" folder to the new computer.
